ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHINA CLUB Page 1 | Page 2
No one was quite sure what to make of the girls in the mini-skirted dresses ornamented with Maoist kitsch, or the Brazilian queen, or the walking lampshades. The invitation itself was a 'little red book'. There were vast steaming dishes carried in procession, various kinds of live music, and a general atmosphere of delightful phantasmagoria. In his opening speech, David said he looked forward to his twentieth anniversary ten years from now. By then, the girls will probably be dressed in mini-skirted spacesuits, and the human lampshades will be able to light up. Certainly there is never a dull moment at the China Club, and compared to the stuffier atmosphere of the more conventional clubs such as the Hong Kong Club, it is Hong Kong's 'fun place'. But this is entirely due to the unconventional personality of David Tang, who combines intelligence with grand panache and high musical taste. (He is also a concert pianist who likes to play Scriabin.)
I befriended a brilliant young fellow named Lawrence Sullivan, who is the cleverest magician I have ever seen. He practices card tricks six hours a day, and it pays off, because he appears to break all physical laws. I wanted to become his agent and tell the world how good he is, but doubtless the world will find out soon enough anyway.
The Sullivan family: Lawrence the magician with his girlfriend Margot Adler, and his parents Jennifer and Randolph. Randolph is Chief Executive Officer of DBS Dao Heng Bank. Instead of having stars in his eyes, he has one on his forehead. Margot is having a quick nap, or maybe she's got eyestrain from staring at Randolph's forehead.
David took a fancy to this Brazilian girl, and she to him. Commissioner Ji Peiding, the new Hong Kong Commissioner (the Hong Kong equivalent of a Governor), seems to find the flirtation interesting. Commissioner Ji is new in his job, and was previously Deputy Foreign Minister with responsibility for Africa and the Middle East. Behind Commissioner Ji is a girl with a lampshade on her head, possibly to throw more light on the proceedings.
This is Carol Lee. She is so alluring that it is hard to stop talking to her. She has trouble filling other people's shoes, as this photo proves. But what she lacks in foot size she makes up for in personality. |
